Mary Nell Massey, DVM, Medical Director
With 17 years of experience, Dr. Massey heads our veterinary team as our medical director. Dr. Mary Nell Massey was raised in Tennessee, near the Southern mountain range where she grew up as the youngest of six siblings. Her family and upbringing on 200 acres of wooded land helped shape her desire to work with animals from a young age. “I spent most of my time outside with our pets.” She recalls. “We had both woods and a pond on our property, so I spent a lot of time outdoors. We would built forts in the forest and spend summers fishing and swimming in the pond!”
Dr. Massey pursued her desire to work with animals, and earned both her undergraduate degree in Animal and Dairy Science, as well as her DVM from Mississippi State University. After graduating in 1997, she worked on a horse farm with the breeding program and as a relief veterinarian at several local hospitals near Memphis, Tennessee. In 2005, Dr. Massey and her family moved to San Antonio and joined the VCA Leon Springs family.
At home, Dr. Massey has a 16 year old son and 14 year old daughter who keep her busy and on her toes! When she is not at work or attending one of her kiddo’s sporting events, she likes to spend time riding horses, working with Student Ministries at the Oak Hills Church, participating in water sports or hiking. “Anything that takes me outdoors!” says Dr. Massey. “Although, I also enjoy curling up on the couch and reading any of James Harriot’s stories…or watching a good movie! I love anything with Morgan Freeman in it…but Monster’s Inc. is probably my favorite film!”
Dr. Massey’s family pets include two dogs (Dixie and Espy) and three cats (Link, Squeak and Jerry). Dixie is a 10 year old Australian Shepherd who loves to come to work, and Espy, a 3 year old Chihuahua who will absolutely cover you in kisses. Link is a huge orange tabby who spends his days playing with Espy, literally bouncing off of the walls playing “ninja cat”. Squeak and Jerry (the most senior of Dr. Massey’s gang) typically spend their days snoozing in the sun together.
