Local Medical Issues

Central Texas is a wonderful place to live, especially for fleas and ticks. We recommend AcuGuard and Simpleguard for dogs and Revolution for cats to help keep your pets free of these parasites.

Leptosporosis is a bacterial disease spread by contact with urine from an infected animal, including dogs, raccoons, squirrels and skunks. "Lepto" can cause serious health issues, and is transmittable to humans, which is why we recommend annual lepto vaccines for dogs.

Rattlesnakes love the warm Austin weather, and we see quite a few snakebites every year. There is a "rattlesnake vaccine" that can be given to dogs to help reduce the effects of the snake toxins in case of an unfortunate encounter with one of these reptiles.

We also recommend an annual intestinal parasite exam to check for giardia. Giardia is a parasite that pets and people can get from drinking infected water. With all of our rivers and lakes in Austin, this is a common problem, and can be easily detected with an intestinal parasite test.
