Local Medical Issues

Central Texas is a wonderful place to live, especially for fleas and ticks. We recommend AcuGuard and Simpleguard for dogs and Revolution for cats to help keep your pets free of these parasites.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease spread by contact with urine from an infected animal, including dogs, raccoons, squirrels and skunks. "Lepto" can cause serious health issues, and is transmittable to humans, which is why we recommend annual lepto vaccines for dogs.

Dr. Stried is Awesome
Bridget Foley from Austin

My adorable hairless cat, Kenny, had an eye problem that had me extremely concerned for his future eyesight. Before finding Dr. Stried, I took him to two vets who quickly examined him and *mis*diagnosed his condition. Not only did those vets not take the time to thoroughly examine Kenny, but they failed to explain to me that he might have a different condition from the misdiagnosed one.

Of course, when Kenny saw no improvement, I was even more worried and frustrated - especially considering that I (a grad student with limited resources) had paid a lot of money to those vets.

In desperation, I posted Kenny's story on Craigslist and asked for a good vet referral. Dr. Stried's name was mentioned in two out of maybe six or seven responses. I immediately called VCA Tanglewood and was given an appt for the next day.

I must say that from the minute I walked in with Kenny until the minute I took him home, I felt like Dr. Stried and his staff treated Kenny and me like family. Not only are they super-nice, but they know their stuff. Dr. Stried spent a long time explaining the anatomy of a cat's eye (drawing diagrams and all) and what problems my cat might have. He gave me multiple testing/treatment options, all the time taking into consideration my finances and my concern for Kenny.

I couldn't have been happier with the services I received at VCA Tanglewood, and I have not worried one bit about Kenny's eye since his visit there.

This might sound strange, but probably the most heartening thing about Dr. Stried and his staff was that I could tell that they realized how much I love Kenny and just wanted someone to help him. He underwent a minor procedure, and they even called that evening and the next day to make sure that he was doing okay.

Another detail which I must share is that when I went to pick Kenny up, the baby blanket that had been in his crate had been washed and smelled all nice and clean! Perhaps Kenny had soiled it, and they washed it to keep me from having to take it back home dirty. They didn't have to go so far out of their way, but they did. I will be taking my other cat to Dr. Stried soon, and I know that he will receive the same top-notch care as Kenny did.
