Shawna Buerkle, DVM, Associate Veterinarian

DVM, University of Georgia

Dr. Buerkle grew up in Charleston SC, and never wanted to leave.  But her love of science took her to Hartsville to the SC Governor's School for Science and Mathematics. She then spent the next decade out-of-state pursuing higher education. She received her undergraduate degree majoring in Zoology at North Carolina State University in Raleigh NC, where she also minored in Spanish and was a member of the marching band. She also spent a semester abroad in Western Australia prior to graduation.  She completed her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine in Athens GA.  Since she wanted to pursue further excellence in veterinary medicine, she spent a year outside of Chicago IL at VCA Arboretum View Animal Hospital completing advanced training in a small animal internship. At long last, she has returned to her home state to join the VCA Palmetto Animal Hospital family in July 2014.
Her roommates include a charming but neurotic Miniature Pinscher named Peter, and a shy Kenyan sand boa named Basil. When not in the clinic, she enjoys combing the beach while watching shorebirds, cuddling with Peter (Basil isn't much of a snuggler), and trying her hand at cooking.
