Biography

Dr. Michael Engel received his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Georgia in 1981. Dr. Engel has a special interest in birds and exotics and enjoys working with all types of pets. He was born and raised in a small town in Iowa. He received his bachelors degree in Zoology from the University of Iowa. After graduation he worked as a zoo keeper in Columbia South Carolina for several years before deciding to pursue a career in Veterinary Medicine. After graduation he worked at a small animal, exotic animal practice in Atlanta, Georgia for nine years. In 1990 he moved to Richmond and opened Pets First Veterinary Hospital. In 2002 he sold Pets First to what is now VCA Antech and stayed on as Chief of Staff until 2007. In the summer of 2007 Dr. Engel and Dr. Pinkleton purchased New Kent Animal Hospital. Dr. Engel and his wife Chris have two sons, Jason and Sean, and a miniature schnauzer, Packer.
