Derek Calhoon is passionate about making good on his lifelong dream of delivering quality veterinary care in order to enhance the lives of animals and their people. He dedicated himself to this journey as a kindergartner in Oakland, eventually graduating two years early from Berkeley High School to attend Diablo Valley College. He then earned a bachelor's degree in Biology from California State University, Hayward summa cum laude, being named Biology Student of the Year for having the highest GPA in his graduation department. He spent a year at the University of Amsterdam under a Fullbright Grant earning a Master's Degree cum laude in Sociology and four years in upstate New York at Cornell University for veterinary school. Dr. Calhoon then returned to his beloved California to complete a rotating small-animal internship at East Bay Veterinary Specialists and Emergency in Walnut Creek. He has since been working on a relief basis for numerous general and emergency small animal practices throughout the Bay Area.
Dr. Calhoon's special interests include ultrasound, surgery, emergency medicine and client education.
Dr. Calhoon is consistently entertained by his two ridiculous cats and spends his free time blogging, traveling and learning about physics and other non-veterinary subjects.
