Above and Beyond
Larry Tokson from Everett

I had been taking my dog Max, a boxer, to VCA Everett from the very beginning. Actually, it was before it was VCA. Anyway, I had to make the unfortunate decision to euthanize Max because he was suffering and his quality of life had gone way down. I had called to bring him in the same day and made an appointment for 9:20 AM. After trying to get him up and walking down the stairs I gave up and called to cancel the appointment because I couldn't get him out of the house. I had been speaking with Janet and she said hold on and after a few minutes he came back and said that they could send one of their vet techs Alex to my house to help me get him out. Max was a very big boxer and weighed over 120 lbs so carrying him down the stairs (I live on the second floor) was quite a task. Well, Alex had walked to my home with a stretcher and a towel. Fortunately I only live right up the street from VCA Everett. We had put Max on the stretcher and proceeded to try and carry him down the stairs. Max kept slipping forward so we had to not do it that way. With the towel Alex brought he put it underneath Max's rear quarters and lifted him up and with me holding him in the front we proceeded to get him down the stairs and into my car. We then drove down the street to VCA Everett and Alex immediately brought Max out back so we didn't have to wait in the waiting room. I was then taken to the quiet room where they perform the Euthanasia and all business was transacted before they brought Max in so I could have time to say my goodbyes. I was not rushed and was able to hold, hug and kiss him for a while and say my goodbyes. I had been crying the whole time and all the staff was so nice and sympathetic. Dr. Lightbody then came in to perform the euthanasia an she was so professional and caring. She first gave Max a shot to help him sleep and then the second shot which actually made his heart stop and he was gone. It was a very peaceful and humane way to go. No suffering whatsoever. She then asked me if I would like to stay with him a bit and I did stay a few minutes more to say goodbye again and tell him how much I love him and how sorry I was to have to do this but that I knew he was in a better place. At that point I was a mess and instead of having to take care of all the business I was just able to leave and deal with my grief. My experience with VCA Everett has been nothing but professional and I find them so caring as well. They had gone above and beyond by sending Alex to help me and I will continue to go there with my other dog, a Pomeranian named Toby. Thanks so much to all the staff at VCA Everett. You guys are the best.
