Local Medical Issues

There are numerous local medical issues that can impact your pet's health, many of which require year-round attention. Heartworm, for example, which is transmitted by mosquitoes that thrive in our region, can affect both cats and dogs. Because our winter temperatures here do not get cold enough to effectively kill mosquito eggs, heartworm is a year-round risk. Likewise, fleas, ticks and intestinal parasites thrive in our warm humid environment.

Based on the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and the Companion Animal Parasite Council, we strongly encourage twice-yearly fecal parasite exams and regular deworming to protect both four-legged and human family members. Many of the parasites we see are zoonotic, meaning that humans can contract them from pets. The abundance of trees, molds and plants in our heavily forested area can be a source of allergies for some pets. Many animals suffer from hypersensitivities to these potential allergens, the signs of which can include scratching, redness, irritation and or infection of the skin or ears.

Leptospirosis is another concern for family pets, as they are often exposed to the urine of wildlife, particularly in The Woodlands and surrounding areas, because there is so much native wildlife near our homes. Please discuss these and any other questions you may have about your pet's health care with a member of our well-trained health care team, or with one of our caring doctors. We'll be happy to give you more information and handouts on common pet health issues. We truly want to provide you and your pets with the best health care possible!

Accreditations & Affiliations
American Animal Hospital Association

The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) sets the standard for quality veterinary care for companion animals. As an accredited hospital, we voluntarily uphold the Association's high standards in 18 different areas and are routinely evaluated on over 900 different standards of veterinary care. Not all animal hospitals are accredited, and we are proud to be amongst only 12-15% of veterinary hospitals that hold this honor.

American Association of Feline Practitioners

The American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) represents practitioners in the veterinary community who are passionate about the care of cats and supports its members in improving the health and welfare of feline patients. With a reputation as a leader in the field of feline medicine, the AAFP helps veterinary practices establish a feline-friendly environment that reduces stress for cats during veterinary visits.
