Biography

Alexander Werner, DVM, Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Dermatology recently joined Westlake Village Animal Hospital. Dr. Werner is one of the few Board Certified Veterinary Dermatologists in Southern California. He is an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of lesions and symptoms affecting the skin, hair, nails, and ear canals, and especially the management of allergic skin disorders. Dr. Werner sees referral cases, including cats, dogs, and horses, from across Ventura and Los Angeles Counties as well as in his practice in Reno, Nevada.

Dr. Werner was raised in the San Fernando Valley receiving his undergraduate degree from Iowa State University. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine in 1987.

Following a one-year internship in small animal medicine and surgery at California Animal Hospital, Dr. Werner was accepted to the residency program in veterinary dermatology at the University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Werner passed his boards to become a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology in 1991.

In addition to consulting on dermatology cases for over two decades, Dr. Werner continues to lecture to veterinarians both nationally and internationally. Dr. Werner has published many articles in peer-reviewed journals. He is the author of several book chapters, and most recently is editor of the dermatology section in the latest edition of the 5-Minute Veterinary Consult textbook. His latest textbook, the Dermatology Companion to the 5-Minute Veterinary Consult was published in 2011.
