The term “avian” refers to birds of all types. At VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital, we have an Avian & Exotics department with extensive training on the medicine and surgery of your feathered companions. We see all species of birds, including passerines (song birds), psittacines (parrots), and raptors (birds of prey). Our Avian & Exotics staff also offers house calls for owners with multiple birds, or for birds that prefer to be seen in the comfort of their own homes. We provide a full range of services for birds, from beak/wing/nail trims to hospitalization and critical care.
Yearly examination is recommended for most birds. It is especially important to have newly acquired birds visit your veterinarian to ensure they are healthy and free from infectious diseases. In older birds, more visits may be necessary to help ensure their health.
When bringing in your pet bird for an appointment, please be sure to bring it in its regular enclosure if possible, or take a photo of the regular enclosure for your veterinarian to review. Also, place fresh newspaper on the cage floor for 24 hours prior to your exam, and bring the newspaper with you. This will allow your veterinarian to assess the quality of your bird’s droppings, which can be telling in some disease processes. For the safety of your pet, all birds must be brought into the hospital in carriers.
