Local Medical Issues

Canine Flu Alert!

Many of our clients have asked about the threat of canine influenza to their dogs. Canine flu is a highly contagious respiratory virus with nearly all dogs that are exposed becoming infected within a few days after exposure. This disease is highly contagious, so dogs that are around other dogs (boarding, grooming, dog shows, dog parks, contact with neighbors' dogs) are at increased risk.

About 80% of exposed dogs will go on to develop signs. Typical symptoms resemble those of kennel cough: a persistent cough (often accompanied by a nasal discharge). Some dogs go on to develop pneumonia and can become critically ill. We now have a vaccine to help protect your dog !

Please remember the importance of vaccinating your pet against rabies. We have had numerous cases reported on Staten Island and citywide. Our doctors will be able to tailor your pet's vaccinations according to you and your pet's lifestyle.

Yearly wellness visits are an important part of your pet's healthy lifestyle. These visits should increase to twice yearly for pets over the age of six.

Here at South Shore we believe a healthy diet is an important part of your pet's daily life. Ask our staff and doctors if your pet would benefit from a specific diet. We carry foods to cover all age groups and specific diets for diabetes and many other diseases.
