As summer approaches, one may not think about how these hot months can be not-so-hot for a pet's health. Veterinary Pet Insurance released findings, which tracked insurance claims, of what the most dangerous days were for a four-legged companion in 2010, and many of them fell in June.
April, June and August seem to be the months that pet owners should keep an eye on their pets, especially around holidays. June 1 fell at number four for most visits to the veterinarian, the day after memorial day.
"The difference in the number of accidents treated between Sunday and Monday may indicate that treatment is more difficult to find on Sundays and holidays," said Dr. Carol McConnell, vice president and chief veterinary medical officer for the pet insurance company. "In case of an off-hours or holiday emergency, pet owners should know where to find the closest 24-hour animal hospital and have a plan for covering unexpected treatment cost.
McConnell adds that being prepared for your pet if there is an accident can be the difference between your furry friend surviving or not.
The rest of the top five most dangerous days include June 7, June 14, September 7 and June 21.
