Alan Finalyson, DVM, Associate VeterinarianDVM, Colorado State University
Doctor Finlayson grew up around animals. He lived on a cattle ranch in Montana as a boy and was a cowboy. He rode horses and trained them before going to college and even competed in rodeo events. He rode bare back horses and bulls. Dr. Finlayson graduated from Colorado State University with his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1972. After graduation he then served and completed a one year medical/surgical internship at Purdue University in West Lafayette Indiana. When he had finished his internship, Dr. Finlayson practiced veterinary medicine in Douglas Arizona and Lymon Colorado before moving to Phoenix in 1976. For the last 38 years he has been providing veterinary care to the animals in the Phoenix and Glendale area.
Doctor Finlayson has a wide range of interests in veterinary medicine. Not only does he provide care for dogs and cats, but he treats goats, sheep, cattle, horses and Pot Bellied pigs. He is an experienced medical diagnostician with medical problems in several species. He also has over 40 years of surgical experience in both dog and cats and other animals. He is experienced in orthopedic surgery as well as soft tissue surgery. One of the surgical areas that Dr. Finlayson is interested in is ear cropping. Dr. Finlayson does ear crops on Dobermans, Great Danes, Boxers, Schnauzers, Miniature Pinchers, and Pit bulls on a regular basis. He has over 30 years of experience in this area.
Dr. Finlayson has been married to the same beautiful woman for 44 years and has 4 children and 9 grand children. He is also a big sports fan. He coached youth baseball and softball for over 25 years and youth basket ball for 10 years. He enjoyed playing both softball and basketball when he was younger, but has decided at this point in his life that it is fun just to be a spectator too. Dr. Finlayson enjoys shooting sports and likes to go target shooting every chance he gets. He also likes to make things with this hands. In his spare time he uses his wood working and welding skills to make things for his family.
Dr. Finalyson joined the VCA PAWH team August of 2013.
