Spring is just around the corner and with the change to warmer weather months don't forget about fleas, ticks, and heartworms. All dogs and cats should be kept on a heartworm preventative, such as Sentinel or Interceptor for dogs and Revolution for cats, year round for their entire lives. These preventatives have added benefits such as intestinal parasite prevention and some such as Revolution and Sentinel have products for flea control. Did you know potting soil can contain intestinal parasites such as roundworms? Roundworms can affect both you and your pets. So although your cat does not routinely go outside, they could still be at risk to become infected with intestinal parasites if you have indoor plants and heartworms, caused by mosquitoes. With warmer weather we all become more active including wildlife. Wildlife can carry many diseases that can be transmitted to our domestic pets. One such disease is Leptospirosis. This is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can be passed from animals to humans. It is a bacterial disease that damages the liver and kidneys of dogs, and can result in death. Recommended vaccines for our area, annual Wellness testing to determine your pet’s overall health and well being as well as Physical Exams are an important part of providing excellent care for your pet(s). Our pet(s) can not talk to us. In the wild animals are programmed to "hide" symptoms of illness for fear being killed or left behind from their pack. Although dogs and cats have been domesticated for many years this has not completely diminished. Therefore many health issues can go undetected by an owner until damage has occurred or in some cases detection and treatment comes too late. We have developed several economical wellness plans to provide optimal care for your pet.To better serve our clients we will begin new hours starting March 29, 2010.
