Joanelle Hernandez-Lopez, Associate Veterinarian
Although she was born and raised in Puerto Rico, Dr. Hernandez has spent the last 10 years in the States for her academic and professional training. At Brown University, she demonstrated an interest in biology, ecology, and zoology and during the summertime kept herself busy by researching hermit crabs in California and rehabilitating manatees in the Caribbean. Thereafter, she took some time off from her studies to volunteer full time at a veterinary clinic where she confirmed her passion for veterinary medicine. During her vet school years at the University of Pennsylvania she traveled to Native American reservations in Washington state and to Thailand to participate in mobile spay/neuter and vaccination clinics serving underprivileged areas. After completing a rotating small animal medicine and surgery internship at Louisiana State University, she returned to Philadelphia to start work as an emergency veterinarian.
Why I do what I do: My passion for emergency medicine stems from the diverse challenging caseload and gratification of helping sick/critically ill patients.
Special Note: Dr. Hernandez has just joined our family but has blended in very nicely. She has the drive and energy to help every pet she comes across. The compassion she shows to each one is an amazing thing to watch. Once you spend time with her you need to keep coming back to get more attention from her. She cares very deeply.
