There are so many reasons for wanting to do what we as veterinarians do as a profession. My reason(s) is two-fold: wanting to do something with my life that matters and my love for animals-one in particular.
When I was in my early 20’s and seeking fame and fortune in Los Angeles, CA, my beloved cocker spaniel- Lady Olivia Jane Duchess of Kent was first diagnosed with mammary adenocarcinoma. Lady Jane was having skin issues (which I’m sure many of our clients can relate to) and I discovered a hard lump on one of her mammae. My boss at the time, directed me to her veterinarian and with surgery and medication Lady Jane’s cancer was placed in remission and she lived for another 8 years. I peppered that poor veterinarian team with so many questions (that they kindly answered) and my interest in this great profession was sparked.
So some 20 odd years later, I am a veterinarian and do what I do for all the animals that have been a healing force in my life so far- my own clients. I am grateful for the teaching and love given so freely by our four-legged furry companions.
