In this part of the state, we encourage pet owners like you to pay particular attention to regional health issues such as:
Internal parasites (small parasites that live in the intestinal tract) are very common, and can be picked up by pets from the soil outside. Sometimes some of these worm eggs can also be found in compost added to plants in the house. Indoor pets could be infected in the house. Regular de-worming medication is critical for prevention of internal parasites, which can affect your pets ability to absorb nutrients. Without treatment, they cause discomfort and can potentially damage the lining of the intestinal tract.
Ticks feed on the blood of dogs, cats, horses, wildlife, and people. Diseases that ticks can transmit to companion animals include Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis/anaplasmosis (bacterial infections), and babesiosis (a blood parasite).
Pets pick up ticks by visiting vegetated places such as grassy meadows, woods, brush, and weedy areas. Be sure to check your pet thoroughly if he frequents these types of environments.
Safe and effective tick and flea preventatives exist, as well as vaccination for your dog to prevent Lyme disease.
Inhalant allergies from pollen and mold often produce severe itching in pets. It is usually concentrated in the ears, feet, groin, and armpits, though it can be spread across the entire body.
