Local Medical Issues
Lyme Disease and Leptospirosis Are Here!Lyme disease is carried by deer ticks, which are extremely common in our area. This disease can cause joint disease, fever, lameness and, in rare cases, kidney failure. Ticks are most common in spring and fall, but they can be active whenever the temperature goes above freezing, even in the middle of winter!
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that attacks the kidneys and liver. It can be fatal to both dogs and humans. The bacteria are spread through the urine of wild animals. If your dog is exposed to puddles, ponds, lakes, lawns or fields in our area, he or she is at risk for this disease and should be vaccinated against it.
