What do all these things have in common? An older dog with a cough that just won’t go away; A cat that suddenly can’t use his back legs and seems to be in pain; A dog that "faints" or collapses. They all could be caused by heart disease.

Heart disease is a common problem in dogs and cats. Heart disease can be complicated to diagnose and treat, just like with people. Advanced tools like heart ultrasounds (echocardiograms), ECGs, blood pressure measurements, and doctors with special training can help animals live longer, healthier lives. Dr. John MacGregor, a veterinarian with special training in cardiology is now available at VCA Lakes Region Veterinary Hospital in the Lakes Region to provide his expertise and care.

Dr. MacGregor is a board certified veterinary cardiologist. He has received an additional 3 years of training just in heart disease. Dr. MacGregor graduated from Dartmouth College in 1988, and completed his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University. His advanced training came in the form of a 1 year internship at Tufts University, followed by a Cardiology residency at Tufts University. Dr. MacGregor comments, "Treatment of cardiac disease in dogs and cats has made tremendous strides in the last 4 to 5 years. We now are able to help animals have a good quality of life for a much longer period than in the past."

Dr. MacGregor’s services are offered on the first Thursday of each month at the VCA Lakes Region Veterinary Hospital for cats and dogs (and their owners, too!). Pets from any animal hospital are welcome however the pet’s primary doctor will need to provide a referral. Questions about scheduling and other details can be directed to Angi Carlo, at VCA Lakes Region Veterinary Hospital, 603-525-8387.
