Dr. Andrea Carlson, DVM, Associate Veterinarian
Dr. Carlson is originally from Wisconsin. Prior to veterinary school Dr. Carlson spent several years conducting wildlife research. She studied the effects of heavy metals on frogs, completed health and disease surveys on desert tortoise, and worked on developing a vaccine for the plague to be used in wildlife. She spent some time working with the veterinary school"s dairy cow herd. She also volunteered at humane societies, spay/neuter clinics, feral cat programs, etc. She completed a one year intership in the Chicago area with VCA and has been working at VCA Herndon Reston for 2 years. As a veterinarian, she really enjoys working with internal medicine cases and performing surgery. She has always loved biology and animals and has spent some time working in research and always wished for more hands-on time with the animals. The veterinary field is the perfect career since she can apply the science that she is so passionate about to helping improve the quality of life in animals. Plus, she gets to spend all day with the animals and their human companions. She also loves being able to witness the strength of the human-animal bond everyday. She has 2 resuce dogs: Flint, a German shepherd and Kaiah, a Border Collie mix and a box turtle named Zippy. She loves being outdoors (hiking, camping, etc), enjoys concerts, trying new foods, playing board games, reading and craft projects. She wishes for a flock of ducks!
