Local Medical Issues

There are numerous local medical issues that can impact your pet's health, and that require your attention over the entire year. For example, there's heartworm, which can affect both cats and dogs. Since it's transmitted by mosquitoes, which thrive in our region, it's a serious cause for concern. But since the winter temperatures do not get cold enough here to kill mosquito eggs, it's a year-round risk. Likewise for the potential for flea and tick infestation, or intestinal parasites each of which poses a problem in any season. Dogs left untreated with a product approved for ticks are at a high risk for Lyme's disease, a potentially life threatening disease transmitted through the bite of a tick. Prevention is the key to keep a pet safe and healthy.

Canine Flu Alert!

Many of our clients have asked about the threat of canine influenza to their dogs. Canine flu is a highly contagious respiratory virus with nearly all dogs that are exposed becoming infected within a few days after exposure. This disease is highly contagious, so dogs that are around other dogs (boarding, grooming, dog shows, dog parks, contact with neighbors' dogs) are at increased risk.

About 80% of exposed dogs will go on to develop signs. Typical symptoms resemble those of kennel cough; a persistent cough (often accompanied by a nasal discharge). Some dogs go on to develop pneumonia and can become critically ill.

A new vaccine is available that can help reduce this risk. Please schedule an appointment today with one of our VCA veterinarians to discuss this emerging threat to your dog.

American Animal Hospital Association

The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) sets the standard for quality veterinary care for companion animals. As an accredited hospital, we voluntarily uphold the Association's high standards in 18 different areas and are routinely evaluated on over 900 different standards of veterinary care. Not all animal hospitals are accredited, and we are proud to be amongst only 12-15% of veterinary hospitals that hold this honor.
