CONFIRMED RABID RACCOON IN S.E. FORT COLLINS
CONFIRMED RABID RACCOON IN S.E. FORT COLLINS:
This is the first rabid raccoon confirmed in a Front Range county in Colorado since 1963!
A raccoon entered a dog enclosure in the area of Trilby and Lemay in Fort Collins and was killed by 4 ...large dogs. The raccoon was submitted for rabies testing and came back positive late Wednesday.
Testing has not yet been done to determine if the raccoon was infected by the skunk rabies variant, but that seems likely given the current local outbreak.
No humans were exposed in this case and the dogs were up to date on their vaccines. Their care will be managed per rabies state protocols.
UNVACCINATED dogs or cats that come into contact with a rabid animal have to be either destroyed or quarantined for 180 days, 90 of which must be at a licensed veterinary hospital/clinic.
To report a potentially rabid animal or an exposed pet, please call the Larimer Humane Society's Emergency Animal Control line @ 970-226-3647 and choose option #7. In a life threatening situation for both humans and animal please call 911 immediately.
Make sure to visit your veterinarian to ensure your animals are protected with up to date vaccines.
