Local Medical Issues

There are many health concerns for pets in our area. Parasites in the form of several types of worms, giardia and coccidia are a concern in our area. Annual fecal testing is recommended to check for parasites. Pets will sometimes show no symptoms of being positive for parasites.

Another health concern in this area is heartworm disease. Transmitted by mosquitoes, heartworm disease can affect both cats and dogs. VCA Elliot Park recommends annual heartworm testing and placing pets on a year-round monthly heartworm preventative, which also helps to prevent additional parasites as well.

Finally, skin and ear allergies are also a health concern here in Arizona. The signs of skin and ear allergies include licking, scratching, redness, and a smelly odor.
