We pledge to instill in our clients trust and confidence that their pets will always receive compassionate, gentle care, and the highest standard of veterinary medical service available.
At VCA Durant Road Animal Hospital, our focus is on the "prevention" side of medicine. Did you know that many diseases can be treated successfully if caught early by simple, routine wellness testing? And did you know that our pets can develop such "human" diseases as diabetes, thyroid issues and liver disease? Fortunately, in addition to having a Feline Hyperthyroid Treatment Center on site, we also have a board-certified surgeon on staff, Dr. Szymeczek. This enables us to perform such surgeries as TPLO, splenectomies, and cruciate surgeries. If your pet needs a "major" surgery, you can rest assured that our doctors and staff are able to take care of them.
Local Medical Issues
The most preventable disease our pets can get is heartworm disease. Did you know that heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes? Heartworms are NOT just a canine disease—our feline friends are able to contract this disease as well. Heartworm disease is prevented by simply giving your pet a flavored tablet once a month. Although there is a treatment for heartworms, it is much safer, easier and cheaper to use the monthly prevention. We recommend that you also use your flea prevention monthly in conjunction with your heartworm prevention. Fleas have become worse in our area over the past few years due to the recent drought. It's definitely easier to prevent fleas than to deal with them after you get them. One flea can lay eggs that turn into hundreds of fleas within a day's time. Not only can they cause irritation to your pet's skin, if ingested while your pet is grooming itself, they can cause the intestinal parasite known as "tapeworms."
Strictly indoor pets are not immune from fleas or heartworms. Fleas can be brought into our homes on our socks or simply picked up by walking your pet in your front yard. Mosquitoes can get into our homes as easily, if not easier, than flies. Protect your pet's health with easy, monthly preventions. Ask our staff for the best products for your pet.
