Biography
Dr. Mao is a native Californian who attended UCLA with a degree in microbiology. During her college years, she conducted genetic research to identify genes involved in DNA repair, and published an article, "The Proliferation of Mutators in a Cell Population," in the Journal of Bacteriology. Following graduation, she traveled to Taipei, Taiwan to complete Mandarin and art classes at Shi Da University. She then moved to the Midwest and braved the cold weather to obtain her doctorate of veterinary medicine from Michigan State University.
After completing an intensive one-year internship in small animal medicine and surgery at VCA West Los Angeles, she worked in Los Angeles for six years in private practice before joining VCA College Park-Ana Brook Animal Hospital.
Dr. Mao has strong interests in soft tissue surgery, abdominal ultrasound, and emergency medicine. She emphasizes preventative care and early disease detection to maximize the quality of life of her patients.
She frequently attends continuing education seminars to obtain the most current information on the new developments in the veterinary field.
In the past, Dr. Mao has worked with exotic pets, including the monkeys, peacocks, and macaws from the Playboy Mansion Zoo. She has appeared on television as a pet expert on "Untamed and Uncut" - a popular series on Animal Planet. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, jogging at dog beach with her Husky mix Jordy, practicing yoga, and playing the violin. (Photo courtesy of Pet Pix)
