Many pet owners can't bear the thought of taking a vacation without their four-legged companions. However, finding a destination that both suits an owner's needs and the needs of their pets can be a challenge.

Although pet havens can be difficult to find, recently listed some of the best resorts and hot spots around the county that are pet-friendly.

First is the EPIC Hotel in Miami, Florida. This hotel allows pets to stay for free and even offers them VIP (very important pets) status. Here, dogs get their own bowls and beds to rest on, while hotel staff will work with owners to coordinate pet sitting, grooming, walking and massages during their stay.

Owners looking to spend quality time with their pets during vacation may want to head north to The Paw House Inn in West Rutland/Killington, Vermont. This pet-oriented bed and breakfast has everything a dog could want, including a Paw House Park - a football field-sized dog run and agility course.

Those looking to head to the coast one last time before winter may want to make a treck to Provincetown, Massachusetts. This colorful fishing hub was recently named "Dog Town USA," from Dog Fancy magazine, as most shops and restaurants are pet-friendly. The magazine also gave its Pilgrim Bark Park the number 2 spot in a national ranking of dog parks.

VCA Animal Hospitals recommend that before embarking on a long journey with a pet, owners should first see how they do during short car rides to ensure the trip to the destination goes smoothly.
